Why Do You Need a Mental Health Strategic Plan?

As an Early Head Start/Head Start program director, one of your jobs no doubt includes facilitating a strategic plan for your program. But, does your program's strategic plan include a section dedicated to planning that is specific to implementing a mental health vision (sample vision)? Having a program-wide vision and a specific strategic plan that outlines goals, objectives, and strategies for ensuring effective, high quality mental health services is one of the keys to having an effective program. A strategic plan is more than a document, it is a process of:

  • Analysis - identifying program strengths and weaknesses;
  • Goal-setting - determining what changes you would like to see in your program;
  • Action planning - planning specific activities to accomplish your goals; and
  • Evaluation and review - determining whether you have met your goals, or whether new/different goals are needed.

In this module, you will learn how to go about developing and implementing a strategic plan that will be useful in supporting quality mental health services and consultation.
